With power-hungry data centres continuously being built to keep up with the growing demands of cloud computing, the cloud is often associated with carbon emission issues. In this presentation at Smart Grids & Cleanpower 2012 at Cambridge University (New Hall) on 14 June, Tate Cantrell, CTO of Verne Global, will debunk the preconceptions surrounding powering the cloud, discussing game-changing alternative data centre sites where power is not only 100% carbon free, but also more affordable than in traditional data centre locations.
Iceland, with its abundant geothermal and hydro-electric power, is a prime example. Cantrell will also cover the questions organisations should ask cloud providers to ensure they reduce carbon footprints while cost-effectively transferring to the cloud.

Tate Cantrell, CTO, Verne Global – A technology and data centre industry veteran, Cantrell has been involved in data centres and other high tech facilities for more than 15 years. As CTO of Verne Global, Cantrell has overseen the recent opening of the company’s latest data centre campus in Keflavik, Iceland, which is 100% powered by green energy. Prior to Verne Global, Tate has led a number of companies, including DuPont Fabros, to success with technical innovation.
